Sacrifice of Love

An inspiring woman in my faith journey has been my Mom. This week was her 50^th birthday and she celebrated BIG. Although she threw a party it was not your typical birthday party; oh no, it was a dancing fundraiser. Okay, let me explain.  It all started five years ago when my Mom’s good friend was diagnosed with breast cancer. I’ve never seen a whole faith community come together so fast. Her friend is a wife, a mother of two and a sister in Christ. Within a blink of an eye, she was in danger of losing her life. In that moment, (I’ll never forget) it didn’t even take a second thought for my Mom to step in to help in whatever ways possible. This included weekly visits of fellowship, bringing her the Eucharist, and even taking her daughters to school. Ever since seeing the effects of this disease  up- close, my Mom  joined the movement for finding a cure for cancer by participating in the annual Susan G. Komen 3-day. She participates in the 60 mile walk during a three day period in San Diego. This fundraiser also takes place throughout America and it is where people share encouraging stories of survival while being a part of sisterhood.

Each year it’s inspiring to see how much goes into each step of the way when months of training, sweat and joyous tears come from this walk. Sometimes, she’ll come home not being able to walk for the next week! But, each time she still says the same thing, “it’s worth all the pain”. It truly inspires me to see how Holy Spirit is completely moving by using a ‘trail in life’ to impact so many lives. Also, a glory story is that my Mom’s friend is now a Breast Cancer survivor. Praise God!


So, why did my Mom throw a Dancing Fundraiser instead of a 50^th Birthday party? Because, she believes that it is more important to invite everyone to share in the great experience of helping this great cause and ministry that will save lives.  This has been a huge witness to me in the sacrifice of love. Let your “Yes” resound and affect the masses, all for the glory of God. I invite you to join the cause.

A Gift?

One thing I’ve learned to appreciate over these past couple months is the gift of detachment. A gift? Yes, I did mean to use that term because God gives us the opportunity to choose the graces of detachment. So what does that mean? This means to rid yourself of anything that you might unintentionally be idolizing and to free yourself in order to be in the posture of “receiving.” These idols may include the ipod, cell phone, internet, and T.V. This doesn’t mean these items can’t be used at all; rather, we need to be intentional with the allotted amount of time we spend using them. I recently realized that over the past few years, when I was living on my own, I was living more deeply into the culture and felt enslaved by the things around me. I felt true freedom when I started to really live into detachment from the world and obedience to God. Warning:  Living your Life to glorify Christ is counter-cultural! But it’s so worth it knowing that I don’t have to worry about what’s going to happen next as long as I’m living each moment to always glorify God. For it was once told to me that the small joys and laughters in life are glimpses of the true happiness received in Heaven.

Each day I wake up and thank God for choosing me to spend a year as a missionary through Life Teen. He just never ceases to amaze me at all the things He’s already done and all the souls that He plans to transform. Praise God! Please let me know how I can be praying for you.
